Four early, then the rain

Sep 27, 2026

The last day of the season started with an hour of rain. When the game finally began, the Mets came out swinging as if there were something left to play for.

Nationals 6, Mets 4. Francisco Lindor scored on Carson Benge's single in the first. In the second, with two outs, Ronny Mauricio hit a two-run homer to center, and Lindor followed with a solo shot to left, his first since September 12. Back-to-back for the second straight day. The Mets led 4–1.

It didn't hold. Washington got one in the second and two in the third to tie it. Andrés Chaparro led off the third and the fifth with home runs off Sean Manaea, and the second one was the lead for good. Manaea went six innings and gave up five runs. Washington added a run in the seventh.

After the second inning, the Mets didn't score again. Benge finished with an RBI. Mauricio drove in two, his second straight day doing real damage.

That's the year. The Mets finished 74–88, in last place in the National League East for the first time since 2003. The rain came back. #LGM
